The origin of the fruit bread

The fruit bread originally comes from southern Germany, Austria and Tyrol and served as a festive pastry for the poor farmers of the Middle Ages who lived at that time. Due to the rather barren landscape, they could initially only use pears and sometimes apples for their fruit bread. Other ingredients, such as dates or figs, were exotic fruits at the time and not affordable for the farmers. Likewise, these were usually only available in larger trading cities such as Nuremberg and were therefore difficult for people near the Alps to buy. Sugar was also not originally part of the composition of a fruit bread, because it was just as difficult to afford. Accordingly, the peasants made the fruit bread only with pears as a sweet source. It was only when new trade routes were opened up and tropical fruits became more affordable that more fruits were used in fruit bread. Another advantage in the production of the fruit bread was added: the fruits could be preserved by baking them wrapped in dough. In some cases, they were additionally soaked in alcohol beforehand.
