Baumkuchendessert look back on a long history
The layered cakes, which are baked over an open flame, were first mentioned in 1682 in a dietary cookbook by Johann Sigismund Elsholtz. At that time, he was the personal physician of Elector Friedrich Wilhelm of Brandenburg. An Italian cookbook from 1426 also reveals that Baumkuchen were already baked in the Middle Ages. In Germany, a recipe from 1450 provides information about the time of origin of Baumkuchen. Today's recipe, which we use at the Kreutzkamm confectionery, had its origins in the 18th century.
